La Cañada is a rural village outside of Tegucigalpa where the local Lutheran congregation provides the only formal preschool education. Heath for Life coordinators extend the church’s health ministry by providing food for these kindergarten children whose families struggle to feed them.
For some children, this is the main food that they receive each day. Meals are prepared by the mothers of the children and are served five days a week during the school year. The mothers are taught basic cooking and health concepts, which they can also use at home. Since this implementation of this program, church leaders have noted improvements in the children’s learning.
